Suntech to Launch BlackPearl (FSLR) (STP)

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (STP) is planning to launch a new generation high-efficiency module, STP250S-20/Wd+ BlackPearl at Intersolar, Munich in June 2011.

The BlackPearl 250W product is a 60 cell module comprising 6-inch black square cells having the capacity to supply one of the highest power per weight ratios in the industry. The module has positive power tolerance in the range of +0 to +5% and exceptionally low oxygen content that resists it from light-induced degradation.

As per IEC standard requirements, the modules are designed to withstand all weather conditions including wind load of approximately 270 km/h and snow loads of approximately 55 kg/m². It is ideally suitable for rooftop installations, where weight, power, and aesthetics are the primary customer requirements.

BlackPearl module’s technology, developed by Suntech's in-house R&D and wafer production team, is based on a wafer manufacturing process that combines the high efficiency of monocrystalline wafers with the reliability of polycrystalline wafers. These modules have an anti-reflective surface that traps the sunlight into the cells combined with a hydrophobic self-cleaning surface structure.

BlackPearl is powered by a new generation of crystalline silicon cells and has conversion efficiency of up to 15.2% in comparison to 13%–14% efficiency of conventional polycrystalline solar modules. It has the potential to deliver 10% extra power than conventional polycrystalline products that will ultimately lead to lower installation costs per watt.

Suntech is planning to deliver the new products to Europe starting from June 2011. It will display the STP250S-20/Wd+ BlackPearl modules and other latest products at booth A2 #380, at the Intersolar Exhibition, New Munich Trade Fair Centre, Germany from 8-11 June, 2011.

Suntech Power is one of the largest producers of PV solar modules in the world. The company is prudently expanding its revenue base to divergent markets around the globe, along with increasing megawatts shipped. Higher conversion efficiency through its Pluto technology-enabled modules, China’s subsidy program and improving operating efficiencies also add visibility to the story.

However, Suntech Power has to procure polysilicon, silicon ingots and wafer from outside depending on a handful of suppliers. Thus, any delay in supply may affect the manufacturing operations of the company and lead to order cancellations, penalty payments, decreased revenue and loss of market share. The company presently retains a short-term Zacks #4 Rank (Sell). We have a long-term Outperform recommendation on the stock.

Based in Wuxi, China, Suntech Power is a solar energy company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets a variety of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, including a broad range of value-added building-integrated photovoltaics products. One of its main competitors is First Solar Inc. (FSLR).
