Calgon Carbon Provides Economic Solutions for Algal Toxins

Zacks

Calgon Carbon Corporation CCC has come up with economic and effective solutions to protect against algal toxins through its innovative Granular Activated Carbon (“GAC”) and UV Oxidation treatments.

GAC is one of the most effective water treatment solutions that helps prevent algal toxins from intruding into drinking water. This treatment has been in use in the U.S. since the 1960s for removal of dissolved organic compounds from water, including algal blooms, chemical spills and oil spills. GAC has also been successful in effectively removing algal toxins like microcystins, anatoxins, Cylindrotoxins and saxitoxins.

The benefits of GAC became more evident to users when over 400,000 residents in Toledo, OH, lost access to drinking water in Aug 2014. This resulted from the shutdown of the Toledo Drinking Water Treatment System owing to algal blooms on Lake Erie. However, 30,000 residents of Bowling Green, OH, who received GAC-treated water from the Bowling Green Drinking Water Treatment Plant using the same Lake Erie water, remained unaffected.

Algal blooms are known to be harmful to human health alongside causing a number of problems to the environment. The blue-green algae are specifically known to produce a number of toxins. Out of these toxins, Microcystin-LR (hepatotoxin), Cylindrospermopsin (hepatotoxin) and Anatoxin-A (neurotoxin) are widely recognized to be the most harmful to human health.

GAC has also been proven to address other water-related problems like carcinogenic disinfection by-products, volatile organic compounds, endocrine disrupting compounds etc. GAC is thus an affordable water treatment option for municipal water providers. UV Oxidation is another effective solution for treating water affected by algal toxins. Calgon Carbon is the sole company providing both these treatments to protect against drinking water contamination, including algal toxins.

The repeated outbreak of algal blooms, resulting in harmful algal toxins in drinking water has been noticed throughout the U.S. To address this problem, the House of Representatives voted on Feb 24, 2015 for approval of the HR212 bill to direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for investigating the impact of algal toxins on drinking water. The U.S. Senate has also taken up a related bill (S 460).

Calgon Carbon currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Better-ranked companies in the pollution control industry include Landauer Inc. LDR, Perma-Fix Environmental Services Inc. PESI and Sharps Compliance Corp. SMED. While Landauer and Perma-Fix Environmental Services sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Sharps Compliance carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
