Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) Narrows Q4 Loss Y/Y – Tale of the Tape

St. Louis, VA based Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (ANR) together with its subsidiaries, is engaged in extracting, processing, and marketing thermal and metallurgical coal. The company has operations in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

Alpha Natural Resources serves customers on five continents and is a leading producer and supplier of metallurgical coal for use in the steelmaking process in U.S.

A supply glut in the global markets has pulled down thermal and metallurgical coal prices. To cope with sustained weakness in demand, Alpha Natural Resources decided to idle few mines in West Virginia.

Investors should note that the estimate for Alpha Natural Resources for the fourth quarter has hardly moved over the last 90 days. The current Zacks Consensus Estimate is a loss of 68 cents remained unchanged over the aforesaid period.

Revenue: Revenues of $931.5 million were short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $995 million and down 3.5% year over year.

Key Stats: Alpha Natural Resources sold 4.9 million tons of Eastern metallurgical coal in the reported quarter compared with 4.8 million tons in fourth quarter 2013.
