DaVita to Merge Business Units, Advance Clinical Research

Zacks

DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc.’s (DVA) business units – DaVita Clinical Research (DCR) and HealthCare Partners Clinical Research – are set to merge, with the motive to expand the clinical research and data analytics services for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

With this unification, the two research organizations of DaVita will be able to provide superior data analytics so as to enhance the level of care for more than one million patients under the company. These patients include 170,000 U.S. dialysis patients under DaVita Kidney Care and 836,000 multi-specialty patients under HealthCare Partners. Enhanced patient care will also be provided to 280,000 CKD and ESRD patients.

Through this merger, the combined organization’s assets will enhance research-study enrollment and retention. Moreover, the collaboration will utilize human resource, intellectual and financial resources of both the entities to lead to an enhanced analysis of situations ranging from burden-of-illness studies to budget impact models.

Apart from enhancing care for DaVita patients, the aforementioned deal will also benefit biopharmaceutical and medical device developers. They will be able to access the analytics capabilities needed to comprehend patient data related to the healthcare provider-based clinical research organizations, thereby improving their services.

DaVita currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in the healthcare services space that look attractive at current levels include Almost Family Inc. (AFAM), Amedisys Inc. (AMED) and Gentiva Health Services Inc. (GTIV). All three stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
