BlackBerry-NantHealth Introduce Cancer Genome Browser

Zacks

Canadian smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry Limited (BBRY) and healthcare data supplier NantHealth recently unveiled the world’s first secure cancer genome browser on BlackBerry’s Passport smartphones for doctors and clinicians.
The large-screened Passport will help medical teams access patients’ genetic data apart from gaining a clear view of X-rays, scans and other related documents. Moreover, medical experts will be able to easily access data on a secure platform from anywhere they like.
BlackBerry Passport handsets integrated with the cancer genome browser will hit markets next year. Initially, the browser will be available on BlackBerry’s QNX operating system, but going ahead it may also support other popular platforms like Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android software. Meanwhile, BlackBerry’s secure mobile network will prove extremely beneficial to doctors and other medical experts.
The growing popularity of data analytics coupled with the need for maintenance of patient privacy in the healthcare industry have encouraged BlackBerry to acquire a marginal stake in privately-held NantHealth.
Lately, BlackBerry has been exploring business options which will help the company offset escalating losses in its smartphone business. Thus, the launch of the browser is in sync with this strategy. In Jun 2014, the company struck a three-year deal with mobile payment company, EnStream LP, to deliver an advanced secure platform for monetary transactions between banks and customers.
Recently, BlackBerry entered into an agreement to buy Secusmart, a leader in high-security voice and text encryption. Further, BlackBerry recently announced plans to introduce its BBM Money service in Indonesia.
Hence, we believe that such value-added services will not only add new revenue streams for the company but will also minimize losses going forward.
BlackBerry currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Another stock which belong to the related industry include SK Telecom Co. Ltd. (SKM) that carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
