Macy’s to Hire 86,000 Employees to Manage Holiday Frenzy

Macy’s Inc (M) plans to hire 86,000 seasonal staff to manage the holiday rush, compared to 83,000 last year.

The additional staff is required for both Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, distribution centers, call centers and online fulfillment centers countrywide. The company’s primary aim is to provide shoppers with a fantastic shopping experience whether they are shopping at stores or online.

Around 1,125 people will be hired for customer service centers and another 3,000 for direct shipping as well as for buy online ship from store services. Another 850 will be hired for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and other major holiday events. Macy's has about 172,500 full-time employees.

As shoppers’ preferences change, retailers have shifted their focus toward building flawless omni-channel facilities and Macy’s is no exception. As more and more people move to online shopping, Macy’s will be employing nearly 10,000 of the seasonal staff to cater to the needs of online shoppers.

Holiday season accounts for a sizeable chunk of yearly revenues as well as profits. This is the reason retailers grab every possible opportunity to drive footfall. Be it early-hour store openings, promotional events, free shipping on online purchases or heavy discounts, retailers will try every trick to boost sales in the holiday season.

Apart from this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company, other retail bellwethers, including Target Corporation (TGT), Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Kohl's Corp. (KSS)., also announced their hiring plans for the upcoming holiday season in anticipation of heavy store traffic. While Target and Kohl's plan to add 70,000 and 67,000 heads to their workforce, respectively, Wal-Mart plans to hire 60,000 seasonal staff.
