Advanced Micro Collaborates with OCZ Storage Solutions

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) recently collaborated with OCZ Storage Solutions, a provider of high performance client and business solid-state storage products for its new Radeon R7 Series Solid State Drives (SSDs) to broaden its gaming offerings.

The technology partnership will offer gamers a budget friendly solution that will enhance the responsiveness of the entire range of their desktop and mobile gaming applications by increasing their performance and consistency.

OCZ Storage Solutions is a subsidiary of Toshiba Group Company and offers high performance solid-state storage products for clients and enterprises. It offers a spectrum of SSDs in a range of form factors and interfaces that allows users to easily manage a huge variety of applications.

The Radeon R7 Series SSDs are built using OCZ’s A19 MLC NAND art flash and Barefoot 3 M00 controller technology and provide excellent write power of 30GB per day, read speed of 550MB per second and write speed of up to 530MB per second. These drives are now available in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB storage capacities at online retailers, starting at $99.99 for 120 GB.

AMD’s turnaround plan remains on track. The company intends to expand its semi-custom business into high growth markets such as the ultra-low power client, embedded, dense server and the professional graphics markets, where AMD can offer differentiated products that use the company’s APU and graphics IP. Management expects to generate approximately 50% of its revenue from these high-growth markets by 2015.

After facing losses due to the decline in PC shipments, losing out market share to Intel (INTC) and being a late entrant in new emerging markets, Advanced Micro needs to do all it can to get the business back on track. Gaming is certainly one of its strongest markets where it has won sockets at all the three major console providers. AMD seems to be on track to further strengthen its position in the segment.

Therefore, Advanced Micro’s shift towards more conducive markets, its game console wins, adoption of its new products, position in graphics and good execution are expected to pull the company out of the PC market doldrums.

Currently Advanced Micro carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in the space include Silicon Motion Technology Corp. (SIMO) and NVE Corp. (NVEC), both of which have a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
