Broadcom (BRCM) Introduces New Physical Layer Transceiver

Leading semiconductor solutions provider Broadcom Corporation BRCM recently introduced BCM82780, the first 28 nanometer (nm) electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) physical layer transceiver (PHY), in the market.

BCM82780 enables 10/40GbE data transmission, which handles short range, long range and extended range optical interfaces. Demand for higher bandwidths across data center, enterprise and core networks is increasing exponentially to seamlessly handle network traffic. With the new product line, Broadcom aims to deliver the highest level of performance and integration facilities, while significantly reducing power consumption. This new PHY is expected to provide a 30% reduction in power consumption. It has a flexible footprint-compatible migration path with advanced feature sets, which help the service provider networks boost performance.
