The Changes McDonald’s Is Making In an Attempt to Attract Health Conscious Consumers

It’s no secret that consumers are starting to care about health. Fast food companies, companies that make soda, and companies that make candy have all felt the pain. However, this isn’t the first attempt that McDonald’s has made at becoming a more appealing choice to the health conscious. In the past, the company focused on adding new low calorie products like apple wedges and salads. However, those efforts were little more than a waste of time. So, McDonald’s knows that it has to take a different approach.

The new approach focuses not on adding healthy products to the menu, but making the products on the menu friendlier to those who care about what they consume. Over the course of the next two years, the fast food giant will weed out all use of chickens that are raised with antibiotics important to human medicine. That’s not the only big move their making either. They also announced that they will be discontinuing the use of beef that contains the artificial growth hormone rbST.

Will McDonald’s Plan Work?

In my opinion, the answer is no. As a health conscious consumer myself, I understand the wave of criticism for fast food that’s sweeping across the United States. While the annexation of the hormone rbST and stopping the use of chickens raised with antibiotics important for human medicine are steps in the right direction, the company has a long way to go before it can claim that its food is “healthy”.

Unfortunately, I think that the fast food business is meeting a bit of a plateau. With more and more consumers starting to think about what they’re eating, attempts to build a growing audience in the industry will most likely prove to be futile; no matter how much money is spent on the hope of attracting new customers.

What We Can Expect From McDonald’s Stock Moving Forward

Although I would have never imagined 5 years ago that I’d be saying this, I think McDonald’s stock is doomed to a long-term, slow and steady downgrade. The bottom line is that for McDonald’s to really appeal to health conscious consumers, they are going to have to make healthy products. Unfortunately, healthy products cost more money to make, defeating the purpose of fast food…keeping it cheap and fast. With that said, McDonald’s is one of those stocks that unfortunately, only has room to drop.
