General Motors Announces Multiple Recalls over the Week

General Motors Co. (GM) has announced a recall concerning 7,598 Chevrolet Caprice police patrol vehicles. These vehicles were imported to the U.S. from its Holden unit in Australia. The automaker is recalling the vehicles to address a problem detected in the shifting mechanism.

General Motors revealed that drivers of the 2011 to 2013 model year police cars may face problems in shifting the transmission out of parking without pressing the brake pedal. Drivers may also face gear shifting problems.

General Motors’ Caprice is a big, rear-wheel drive car. It competes with Dodge Charger and a version of Ford Motor Co.’s (F) Taurus in the police vehicle segment. There is report of one accident due to this defect. However it did not lead to any injuries.

Earlier, General Motors announced a temporary ban on the sale of the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks. The trucks are being held back to fix a faulty air bag issue.

As per market reports, dealers have sold only a few dozen of the 2015 midsized trucks. Notably, General Motors was banking on the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks to make a comeback into the smaller-truck market after 2011. However, the automaker faces tough competition from Toyota Motor Corporation’s (TM) Tacoma trucks.

The driver air bags in the Colorado and Canyon trucks may not be wired properly which will affect the vehicles' two-stage air bag system and reverse the deployment sequence, thus hindering a timely deployment of the airbags. However, no crashes or injuries have been reported so far.

General Motors also announced two recalls involving 524,384 vehicles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico last week. The first recall mainly covers Cadillac crossovers and a discontinued Saab SUV.

The automaker recalled the vehicles to fix loose joints and worn threads. There are reports of three crashes and two injuries due to this defect.

In a separate development, General Motors announced that it will fix 89,294 units of the 2013-15 Chevrolet Spark minicar in the U.S. The vehicles have been detected with a problem in the secondary hood latch striker, which may stick in the open position due to corrosion. If the primary latch is not engaged, the hood can also open unexpectedly. The automaker will fix about 13,000 Sparks which were imported from South Korea.

General Motors has announced 75 recalls covering about 30 million vehicles in North America so far this year. The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Gentherm Incorporated (THRM) with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) is a better ranked automobile stock worth considering.
