Geosyntec Consultants Awarded WERF Funding for Innovative High-Performance Green Infrastructure Research

PR Newswire

ATLANTA, May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Geosyntec Consultants (Geosyntec) announced today it has been awarded funding under a Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) program for the design, installation, measurement, and analysis of a series of actively controlled, distributed green infrastructure (‘high-performance green infrastructure”) approaches for urban stormwater control. Geosyntec will demonstrate through this $175,000 research effort that the integration of currently available, innovative, flexible, and inexpensive hardware and software architectures provides a new suite of tools for sewer and stormwater utility operators to optimize investments in green infrastructure and potentially solve intractable problems that must be addressed but are viewed as unachievable or not cost effective using conventional passive solutions. Using EPA SWMM-5 software, Geosyntec will model the performance of advanced rainwater harvesting systems, actively controlled green roofs and controlled under drain bioretention systems at both the site and planning scales to document potential significant cost savings for combined sewer overflow mitigation associated with the field application of such approaches at locations around the country. The results are anticipated to provide utilities with a new set of cost-effective and flexible tools for meeting increasingly complex water pollution compliance goals associated with combined sewer long-term control plans and other Clean Water Act requirements.
